Behavioral Health Support for the Senior Care Workforce
Caregiving is meaningful work, and it's also hard work. Supporting the mental health of the people who support your residents and patients isn't optional — it's foundational.
What the Research Shows
Burnout, trauma exposure, and compassion fatigue are well-documented across the caregiving workforce, and the environment a facility provides makes a measurable difference.
Burnout Has Grown Sharply
46% of health workers reported burnout "often" or "very often" in 2022, up from 32% in 2018.

Work Environment Matters — A Lot
Among nursing-home RNs, 34% met burnout criteria overall — but that ranged from 55.4% in facilities with a "poor" work environment to just 14.7% in facilities with a "good" one. Staff in well-resourced facilities were roughly 85% less likely to report burnout.

Harassment Reports Have More Than Doubled
Reports of workplace harassment among health workers rose from 6% in 2018 to 13% in 2022, and are linked to higher rates of burnout, depression, and anxiety.

There's No Reliable Massachusetts-Specific Number — And That's Okay
No credible Massachusetts-specific long-term-care burnout or compassion-fatigue rate currently exists. What the national research consistently shows is that facility environment and support systems — not just individual resilience — drive outcomes.
Resources
Where to Point Your Team
Crisis Resources
The 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline is available free, 24/7, by call or text, for anyone in emotional distress or crisis — for your staff or their family members.
EAP Navigation
Employee Assistance Programs offer confidential, short-term counseling and referrals. 81% of employers now offer one — the challenge is usually awareness, not availability.

Telehealth
Virtual behavioral health visits remove two of the biggest barriers for shift workers: scheduling and travel time.
Behavioral Health Vendors
Digital mental health platforms and specialty vendors can extend support beyond what an EAP alone typically covers, especially for ongoing therapy needs.
Manager Training Resources
Frontline supervisors are often the first to notice burnout or distress. Training them to recognize warning signs and point staff to the right resource is one of the highest-leverage investments an employer can make.
